STUDY TRIPS

China Through Landscapes and Literature

Travel Dates: July 6 – August 7, 2007 (Dates subject to slight revision.)
Application Deadline: Monday, January 8, 2007
Eligibility: This trip is open to humanities, foreign language, or area studies educators in international studies schools nationwide. Please note this application process is now closed.

China’s extraordinary economic, political, and cultural developments in recent years make this an exceptional time to explore this vast nation. Dr. John Major, a renowned Asia scholar, will lead participants on a trip investigating four contemporary themes through the country’s landscapes and literature: Global China, Diverse China, Developing China, and Changing China. Asia Society invites qualified middle and high school humanities, foreign language, or area studies teachers in Asia Society’s International Studies Schools Network and at urban, public international studies secondary schools nationwide to apply for our 2007 China Study Tour: China through Landscapes and Literature, to take place July 6 – August 7th (dates subject to change). The application deadline is Monday, January 8, 2007.

Highlights of the itinerary include the following: Beijing, where participants will study imperial traditions and foreign relations; the Yungang Caves, where the stone carvings illustrate the importance of non-Han peoples in China as well as the transmission of Buddhism from India; Guizhou Province, to investigate the lives and historical experiences of several nationalities; Xi’an through visits to the Great Mosque and Muslim quarter; Wutai and Qiyun, two holy mountains to share the experiences of centuries of pilgrims; visits to the well-preserved town of Pingyao, the rapidly industrializing canal and garden city of Suzhou and the bamboo forest of Yixian in the Huang Shan mountain range, to illustrate issues of how to preserve the landscapes of the past, when to sacrifice them in the name of progress and what the costs and political uses of each decision are; and Shanghai, where the modern challenges of rapid urbanization, the rise of the middle class, and the transformation of rural landscapes come together.
